Services vs. content: creating value for the people you're here for
We're hosting a special edition Service Desk workshop ahead of the Lenfest News Philanthropy Summit, and we'd love for you to join us.
In this free 90-minute working session, we bring together news and information practitioners to define how service-oriented journalism practices inform audience and revenue strategy, and how to measure them. Participants will leave having mapped value exchanges between their organization and their readers, and having developed a strategy for outcomes-based measurement.
Come with a media or information venture in mind that you'd like to work on. After the workshop, attendees can book 1:1 conversations with us to keep developing their service strategy.
What participants will leave with
- A mapped value exchange between your organization and the people you serve
- A starting strategy for outcomes-based measurement, not just outputs
- A free beta version of our service design booklet
- The option to book a 1:1 follow-up conversation with us to keep working on your service strategy
Logistics
- Date: May 18, 2026
- Time: 10:00 to 11:30 a.m.

About the Service Desk
The Service Desk is Gazzetta's applied service design practice for civic media, led by Madison Karas and Patrick Boehler.
With the support of The Lenfest Institute for Journalism, we have worked with dozens of media ventures, from national legacy newsrooms to independent creators, to identify and sharpen their concrete service and revenue opportunities, map the obstacles that prevent follow-through, and translate good intentions into specific, testable services people can actually use.
If you've worked with us before, this session is a chance to keep going. If you haven't, it's a useful introduction. You can read about what came out of our last Philadelphia sprint in More is not always better: Lessons from our Philadelphia media service design sprint.
